Grad cap

You might be wondering how to access Accessibility Resources and Services at Empire State University. Don't worry, you're not alone. SUNY Empire is here to support you and ensure you get the most out of your higher education experience.

Below is a step-by-step guide to help you through the process of acquiring accessibility services.

1. Requesting Accommodations:

To begin, students can request accommodations based on their individual experiences with disabilities. These accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis, as there is no predetermined list to choose from.

2. Understanding Accommodations:

Accommodations are adjustments or support provided to make your learning experience accessible and fair. For instance, if you require additional time for exams or access to class materials in alternative formats, the university can arrange for these accommodations. The aim is to create an equal opportunity for success, without lowering any standards.

Please note: Accommodations and modifications are sometimes used interchangeably, but they do have slight differences. Modifications involve actual changes to a course or program and are more significant alterations to meet individual needs.

3. Determining Your Accommodations:

The type of accommodation you receive will depend on your specific disability and how it impacts your learning. The Office of Accessibility Resources and Services works closely with you to determine the most suitable support. They may also collaborate or refer you to other offices to connect you with the necessary services for your success.

4. Steps to Request Accommodations:

To request accommodations at SUNY Empire, follow these steps:

a. Complete the Disability Declaration and Request for Accommodationsform. Determining the functional limitationsof your disability may help you determine the accommodations you wish to request.

b. Submit the completed form to the Office of Accessibility Resources and Services. Once the completed form is received, the office will schedule a virtual meeting to discuss your request in more detail.

c. Communicate with your faculty regarding your accommodations. The Office of Accessibility Resources and Services will email the accommodation notice to you and your instructors during week two of each term once the add/drop period has ended

5. Tailored Support:

The Office of Accessibility Resources and Services will review your request and assess what specific accommodations or services you may need. Their goal is to tailor their support to your unique circumstances, ensuring that you have everything you require to thrive academically.
